#368 Zero-Based Thinking

What Goes if You Started at Zero?

Brian Tracy is one of my favorite old-school self-development teachers. I can still remember listening to his CDs back in the day when I was first getting into all this stuff. And, we’ve covered a number of his books including Maximum Achievement, Eat that Frog, Goals!, Focal Point and No Excuses.

The man is a Big Idea machine. Here’s one of my favorites.

Brian tells us that it’s often helpful to “zero base” your thinking.

Here’s how he puts it in Focal Point: “To simplify your life, zero-based thinking is one of the most powerful strategies you can learn and apply on a regular basis. Here’s how it works. Ask yourself, ‘Is there anything I am doing right now that, knowing what I now know, I wouldn’t get into again if I were starting over today?’”

Think about that for a moment.

Step back from everything you’re doing and imagine you have an absolute blank slate in your life. Knowing what you now know, is there anything you’re currently doing that you wouldn’t get into again if you were starting over today?

Hmmm…

(Yes, that can be painful. And, it can be equally powerful.)

That’s Part I of the reflection exercise.

Here’s Part II: “If your answer is ‘yes,’ then your next question is, ‘How do I get out of this situation, and how fast?’”

THAT can be an even more challenging (and even more powerful!) exercise. 🤓

Today’s +1. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to do Part I of our zero-based thinking exercise. And then proceed to Part II if you feel so inspired.

Then to Part III which, of course, is to take action on Part II.

Here’s to the +1s that often follow the 0s!
