#837 Want a Rose?

Respect the Thorn

The other day I got back from the Trail after my first Deep Work time block to check in for my time with the kids to give mommy a little time for some self-care and her own Deep Work before I got back at it.

Emerson and Eleanor and I planned to go to the park.

But Emerson was a little cold so he asked me to make him some tea to warm up. (He also hopped in the sauna with mommy for a minute to warm up. 🤓) (That’s like us!! Go Team Johnson! 🤓)

So…

Of course, I made him some tea.

Traditional Medicinals Lemon Balm for curious souls.

All of which leads us to the little aphorism on the tea bag that will be the focus of our chat Today.

Here it is:

He who wants a rose must respect the thorn. – Persian Proverb

I read that and thought to myself: That’s fantastic.

Isn’t it?

And, that’s Today’s +1.

Want a rose?

Respect the thorn.

KNOW (!!!) that trying to create something beautiful—whether we’re talking about our lives and/or our marriages and/or, well, anything!—is going to come with challenges.

And, for whatever reason, nature seems to have a funny dynamic.

The more beauty we want to create, the more challenging it is.

And, well, it is what it is.

He who wants a rose must respect the thorn.

That’s Today’s +1.

The next time you prick your finger on a (metaphorical) thorn, see if you can smile and remember that the thorn goeswith the rose. It’s a reverse indicator that you’re up to something beautiful.

And…

Let’s take off our gardening gloves for a moment. Let’s stand up straight. And dust the dirt off our knees from all that weed pulling we’ve been doing.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on all the beautiful roses we’ve already created in our life gardens.

Don’t those roses smell nice?
