#671 The Magic Pill of Meditation

Do You Take It? (Science Says…)

In our last +1, we talked about meditation’s instant ROI.

Quick recap: Stanford science says that if you have trouble sleeping, you can fall asleep TWICE as fast if you’re a meditator than if you’re not (going from taking 33 minutes to fall asleep to falling asleep in 15 minutes) — basically giving you an instant ROI on that 15 minutes of meditation you do today on a pure time basis, before we add in all the other benefits.

Let’s invite Jonathan Haidt to the party to explain some of those benefits. Jonathan is one of the world’s leading scientists studying well-being. In The Happiness Hypothesis he tells us:

“Suppose you read about a pill that you could take once a day to reduce anxiety and increase your contentment. Would you take it? Suppose further that the pill has a great variety of side effects, all of them good: increased self-esteem, empathy, and trust; it even improves memory. Suppose, finally, that the pill is all natural and costs nothing. Now would you take it?

The pill exists. It’s called meditation.

So…

If you could get all those benefits in one little pill, would you take it?

OF COURSE YOU WOULD! (Laughing.)

So, uh…

What are you waiting for?

Here’s to popping that pill Meditation 101 style and enjoying our reduction in anxiety along with those increases in contentment, self-esteem, empathy, trust and memory.
