#1181 Jesus, Tolle, You and Your House on the Rock

The Parable of the Wise and the Foolish Builders

The other day I ran into my friend Michael on the Trail.

Well, technically, we did a 6-feet-apart virtual elbow tap as it was the start of the COVID-19 crisis.

He asked me if I’d seen Eckart Tolle’s recent talk on how to deal with crisis. I told him I hadn’t. (I read books, folks! lol. 🤓)

He told me Tolle read from the Bible and shared the story about the guy who builds his house on the sand and it gets destroyed when the storms come in.

I thought, “Yep. That’s exactly right.”

Fast-forward a bit and I’m reading Tom Morris’ most recent book called Plato’s Lemonade Stand. It’s all about using ancient wisdom to turn lemons into lemonade.

You know what story he uses to bring home the point about the power of building our lives on unchangeable truths so we can weather the inevitable storms of life?

The same passage from the Bible Tolle referenced.

Enter: Google search.

Two of them.

First, to find Tolle’s talk. Here it is.

Second: To find the passage from the Bible. It’s known as The Parable of the Wise and the Foolish Builders. It’s also known as The House on the Rock.

You’ll find it in Matthew 7:24-27.

Here it is:

“24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

That’s Today’s +1.

Interpretative Note: You are the builder. Your life is the house. Practicing (or not practicing!) the fundamental truths of your philosophy is the foundation.

So…

How’s your house?

Have you been building the foundation on the rock of your philosophy?

Aka are you PRACTICING YOUR PHILOSOPHY?

It’s in times of rain and floods and winds when we get a little (or a lot!) more clarity on the quality of our construction.

Here’s to building our lives on solid rock.
