#498 How to Discover Your Mission

3 Steps to Clarity on Your Life’s Work

While we’re talking about Alex Lickerman and his ideas on how to create an indestructible self while turning poison into medicine and all that goodness, let’s talk about your purpose in life.

Specifically, your MISSION in life.

As Sonja Lyubomirsky tells us, happy people have projects. And, as all the great philosophers and psychologists have said since the dawn of time, the happiest among us have figured out how to make our lives an offering to the world—actualizing our potentialities in service to our families, communities and world.

I love how Alex puts it. He shares an exercise to help us get more clarity on our soul-nourishing purpose. It goes like this.

Three steps.

Step 1. Write down fifty or so experiences that have brought you the most joy.

Step 2. Then figure out “which ones involved contributing to the well-being of others and the mission statements you would craft for each of them.”

Step 3. Then “imagine being given an award by the president at the age of ninety for having spent your entire life dedicated to whichever one seems to you the most consequential. Whichever ‘award’ fills you with the greatest sense of pride—whichever makes you feel the greatest sense of satisfaction— then that’s the mission you should probably spend your life trying to fulfill.”

Wow. I love that.

Today’s +1.

If you feel so inspired, find some quiet time and…

1. Write down fifty or so experiences that have given you the most joy.
2. Identify which ones involved you contributing to others.
3. Imagine being given an award at the age of ninety for having spent your entire life dedicated to the Mission that most inspired you.

THAT is a pretty good hint at the mission you should probably spend your life trying to fulfill, eh?

Here’s to that Mission… Should you choose to accept it! 🥇
