#626 Driving with Your Brakes On

Anthony de Mello on Letting Go of Some Fear

In our last +1, we talked about Seth Godin’s wisdom regarding the fact that, as unfortunate as it is that we might have wasted so much of our life (gah!), it would be unforgivable to wait any longer to give our best to our families, communities and world.

Unfortunate vs. Unforgivable.

That reminds me of some wisdom from the great spiritual teacher, Anthony de Mello.

In Awareness, he tells us that we live with too much fear. Too much hesitation. He says that our self-doubt and fear of failure constricts our energy and our joy—and that living like that is kinda like driving with one foot on the gas and one foot on the brakes.

Specifically, he says: “Get rid of your fear of failure, your tensions about succeeding, you will be yourself. Relaxed. You wouldn’t be driving with your brakes on. That’s what would happen.

Imagine that.

You, driving on the freeway of life.

One foot on the gas.

One foot on the brakes.

Eek.

Today’s +1.

Roll down the window. Smell the brake dust. Look down at your feet. Take your foot off the brakes.

Now, take a nice, deep breath (in through your nose, down into your belly, with a slightly longer exhale, Breathing 101-style, of course!). Let go of some fear. Be yourself.

And enjoy your drive today!
