#833 Distraction

It Can Be a Full-Time Job (Is It Yours?)

In our last couple +1s, we’ve been having fun hanging out with Jake and JZ and their wisdom on how to Make Time.

Today we’re going to talk about what Destroys Time for a lot people.

Reminder: These guys LOVE technology. Jake helped build Gmail. JZ helped build YouTube. Then, together, they helped build dozens and dozens of the leading tech companies financed (and supported) by Google Ventures.

But…

They tell us: “Look, we love technology. But there is a very serious problem here. Combine the four-plus hours the average person spends on their smartphones with the four-plus hours the average person spends watching television, and distraction is a full-time job.

Did I read that right?

The average person spends four hours a day on their smartphone?

And another four-plus hours a day watching TV?

Let me get my calculator and add that up.

8+ hours?!?

Yep.

For the average person, “distraction is a full-time job.”

Yet another reason we don’t want to be (and I laugh as I type this) an “average person.”

Cue Krishnamurti and Mark Twain again. (Perhaps we should just put them on autorepeat?)

Krsihnamurti: “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

Twain: “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to
pause and reflect.

Today’s +1.

Let’s bust out our time-tracking tools and a calculator.

How much time are YOU spending watching TV and on your smartphone?
