#909 Creative Hiccups

How to Cure Them

In our last +1, we hung out with Steven Kotler and talked about flow junkies while smashing together two ancient words (“hedonic” + “eudaimonic”!) to feel the joy that comes when we make our actualization instantly awesome.

I mentioned the fact that spending 4.75 hours in a Deep Work flow bubble led to a feeling of hedonically eudaimonic bliss. 👼

What I didn’t mention was the fact that there were a couple of hiccups during the day when I almost let my “I don’t feel like it” voice command the airwaves.

You know what I’m talking about.

We get all fired up about hammering some important work and then Mr. or Ms. Whiney pops up in our heads convincing us that now’s not quite the time to do whatever it is we thought we wanted to do.

Rather than listen to that little whiney voice and follow his lead to Distractionville, I simply got to work and… Voila! Magic.

It was actually the fact that I KNEW I had made it through a couple of those micro-moments of decision that made that day particularly sweet.

I KNEW the “old” me would have been more likely to cave in to the temptations and I wouldn’t have even been aware of why I didn’t feel so great at the end of the day.

You know what I’m talking about?

That’s Today’s +1.

When you get to a choice point Today, +1 it.

NOTICE the little sub-optimal Mr. or Ms. Whiney Voice.

Wave at him or her.

And go do what needs to be done.

Remembering David Reynolds’ brilliant wisdom: “The mature human being goes about doing what needs to be done regardless of whether that person feels great or terrible. Knowing that you are the kind of person with that kind of self-control brings all the satisfaction and confidence you will ever need. Even on days when the satisfaction and confidence just aren’t there, you can get the job done anyway.
