#686 Conquering Fear

Your #1 Job

A few +1s ago, we spent some time swimming with Abraham Maslow. As you may recall, he told us: “If I was dropped out of a plane into the ocean and told the nearest land was 1,000 miles away, I’d still swim. And I’d despise the ones who gave up.

← Talk about relentless. 😲

We pulled that gem from Stan Beecham’s Elite Minds.

Today we’re going to talk about another gem from that book. Stan Beecham tells us: “Fear is keeping you from reaching your potential. Conquering fear should be your primary goal in life.

I hereby declare that this is one of those, “Let’s pause and soak that in!” moments. 🤓

We’ll break it down into two parts.

Part 1. “Fear is keeping you from reaching your potential.

Can you feel the truth in that?

Your potential is “out there.” The #1 thing keeping you from reaching it? Fear.

Note: This isn’t just a modern-day mental toughness coach. Aristotle used slightly different language but said pretty much the EXACT same thing 2,500 years ago.

In his vernacular, “reaching your potential” was becoming the best version of yourself (eudaimon!). That, in his mind, was the most important thing we could do (the highest good or summum bonum!) and led to a deep sense of well-being/flourishing/etc. (eudaimonia!).

And…

Guess what? Do you remember how Aristotle told us to go about achieving that highest good?

To live with virtue.

And…

Do you remember his #1 (!!!) virtue?

Courage.

Why?

Because: “Fear is keeping you from reaching your potential.

Which leads us to…

Part 2. “Conquering fear should be your primary goal in life.”

That’s Today’s +1.

How’s your fear?
